Tech Solutions for Everyday Executive Challenges

When we are trying to navigate a problem and find a solution, it can be very overwhelming and one of the biggest challenges to the EF process. We encounter an obstacle or challenge, need to reflect, regroup, and pivot to a new strategy or plan. This is complicated but there are tools available to help streamline the process.

Here are some ways tech can foster the problem-solving process and solve some very common Executive Function challenges!

Can’t keep track of your time?

Timeblock your week so you can more easily see when you are busy and when you are free. Using a digital calendar such as google calendar is a great way to make sure no appointments or tasks are missed. Blocking your time enables you to plan ahead and track your time to avoid common obstacles such as time blindness and procrastination.

Can’t guess how long a task will take?

The next time you sit down to complete a task, estimate how long it will take. Then set a timer to see if your estimation was accurate. Using a timer helps with task initiation and time blindness. The closer your estimate is to reality, the better you will be able to budget time and plan in the future.

Can’t focus?

Using a focus app like focus@will or Freedom can help minimize distractions. You can also turn your phone on airplane mode or do not disturb.

Can’t remember?

Use the reminders or shortcuts app on your phone to set up alarms or actions for specific times to alleviate your working memory and automate decision making.

Can’t get out of bed?

Use a more robust alarm. Alarmy asks its users to solve puzzles or simple math problems to shut off the alarm. You can also use Alexa’s wake up feature to streamline your morning routine.

Can’t figure out what to do first?

Upload your tasks into an app like Notion, which has built in prioritization features.

When we employ tech to help us problem solve and work towards our goals, it can be one of our greatest assets. Create your own virtual survival kit right on your phone and find the solution that is right for you!
